30 Years Of Demanding Excellence

Elizabeth Rehrauer, New Auburn 8th–12th grade English teacher, stands in front of a collection of books from 30 years of teaching literature and other English courses.

On May 30, 2008, the New Auburn School District will honor Elizabeth Rehrauer with a retirement party at Ruby’s Roadhouse in Bloomer. Mrs. Rehrauer is retiring after 30 years of teaching English to junior high and high school students in New Auburn.

“People seldom thank a teacher for being tough,” said Brian Henning, New Auburn school principal, “yet if we could somehow put a value on those cover letters and resumes that helped kids get jobs, or the scholarship summaries that awarded kids with money for school, or the books that college freshman didn’t have to read because they already read them in high school, I think we would all be amazed.

“Mrs. Rehrauer will be missed in so many ways that most people probably never even considered.”

So, what makes a teacher that valuable and what keeps her going for 30 years? To answer those questions and a few more I caught up with Mrs. Rehrauer; former student Michael Perry, author, humorist and speaker; and current students Maura Schwaegel, senior, and Nicole Crooker, junior.

My first question to Mrs. Rehrauer was, why did you go into teaching?

“It just seemed like a good fit,” said Mrs. Rehrauer. “I always wanted to make a difference with the kids. I always thought that I could, that I would love, to take kids and get them to know something, to love something as much as I do. (more)
Bartender License Guidelines End Rubber-Stamp Process
If you’re thinking about becoming a bartender in the city of Bloomer, don’t think that getting a license is simply a rubber-stamp process.

Since the council approved the city’s new guidelines for a bartending license at the Oct. 10, 2007 council meeting, Chief of Police Richard Carr has recommended against approving at least two bartending license applications, and the council went with his advice.

The guidelines consist of a point system, which assigns points for law and ordinance convictions. It is the practice of the police department to recommend denial for any license applicant who has a total of nine points or more.

The time since the conviction is divided into 0-5 years and 5-10 years. Convictions more than 10 years old are not considered. The convictions are also grouped as ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’.

A Class ‘A’ conviction within the last 5 years is nine points, which qualifies for a recommendation of denial; a conviction 5-10 years in the past is six points. Convictions for crimes classified as ‘A’ include felony drug possession, delivery of a controlled substance and maintaining a drug house. (more)
